Fraudulent Emails being sent to Empoyers
Ohio businesses are being warned about an Internet message they may have received that accuses them of misrepresentations in their reporting to the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation that fraudulently lowers their insurance costs.
The subject line reads: “Payroll Fraud Case #863538 Tax Evasion.”
The message comes from a company called National Payroll Reporting Consortium, Inc. (NPRC).
The BWC warns recipients not to respond to the message.
Along with an official looking graphic the message reads:
“It was brought to our attention that your company made numerous misrepresentations regarding worker classification and payroll to fraudulently lower the company's workers' compensation insurance costs and thereby gain an illegal competitive advantage.
In order to resolve this issue please fill out the form attached to this email and fax it back to our Fraud Department. Employment tax fraud is a growing concern and represents a large portion of the nation's tax gap.
Suspected tax fraud can be reported to the IRS using IRS Form 3949-A, Information Referral. Form 3949-A is available for download from the IRS Web site at IRS.gov. Evading employment taxes can have serious consequences for employers and the employees.”
